MR rejects authoritarian tag (Audio)

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has rejected the idea that he or the government is undemocratic or moving towards authoritarian rule.
Addressing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party rally in Kurunegala today, the President said that there is no other country in Asia where so many elections have been held
He said that since coming to power in 2005 there have been 11 elections under his government and it was under his government that he LTTE was also defeated.
“What’s more democratic than that. A dictator is someone who does not have elections and works to his own interest,” the President said.
His comments come just as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay had made a comment last Saturday in Colombo stating that Sri Lanka was heading towards authoritarian rule.
“Some people want to remove me somehow. So do that. But the public will never let go of the SLFP,” the President said.
The President said that some “external forces” are attempting to give the impression that there is a conflict among the communities in Sri Lanka.
President Rajapaksa meanwhile noted that there is no opposition in the country and so government members are fighting among themselves. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Even Gaddaphi had elections. What about Saddam Husain. what happened to independent election commision. These are the indicators and not the eyewash elections important

  2. What about his new best friend in Belarus, the last dictator in Europe who holds elections all the time? How clueless is this guy? Egypts Mubarak had elections all the time too. Was he a democrat too then?
