A hotline for human rights

The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission has established a hotline where the public can lodge complaints over human rights related issues.
Four digits Hotline 1996 is open to the general public for their convenience and to inform of any urgent complaints to the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, the Human Rights Commission in Sri Lanka said.
The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka was established in the year 1996 and therefore this number was selected, the Commission said.

Train rams into car in Jaffna, 1 killed, 3 injured

A train crashed into a car at an unprotected railway crossing in Jaffna this afternoon killing one person and injuring three others. Reporters in Jaffna said that the car had attempted to cross the?unprotected railway crossing?when the train heading to Jaffna from Colombo crashed into the vehicle. Power in Jaffna, holds talks with Wigneswaran

The US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power visited Jaffna today and had talks with Northern Province Chief Minister C V Wigneswaran and several others. She discussed the current human rights situation in the North and other related matters. She also met the Northern Province Governor and discussed development plans for the North. Former LTTE member found dead near home

A former LTTE member who was rehabilitated and released into society, was found dead near his home in Mannar. Weerasingham Dhanapalasingham, aged 40, was working as a fishermen when he was found dead near his home on Saturday. The police said that his body was found hanging from a swing tied to a tree near a tent close to his house. A person who had gone to take him for fishing had found him dead. Initial investigations have found that the man may have committed suicide. (Colombo Gazette)
