Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa says the police must maintain a good relationship with the civil population while maintaining law and order.
The Defence Ministry quoted him as saying that the police, including the Special Task Force (STF), have been given extensive training to deal with law and order issues.
He said that even the STF has been stationed in all districts to assist the police if they are unable to control a law and order situation.
Rajapaksa said that in a post war situation the police should also ensure that the public feel they are in a peaceful situation.
He said that while protests and demonstrations can be staged in a democratic country, those protests should be staged in a responsible manner.
The Defence Secretary said that the public have a responsibility to protect the name of the country and not allow it to go back to its war days. (Colombo Gazette)
