New laws on monks (Audio)

Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne says new laws will be introduced where the chief prelates can remove a Buddhist monk who disrespects the robe.
The Premier said that while the chief prelates are known to respect and promote Buddhism there are some who wear the robe and do wrong.
?The Sanga Sabha can take a decision on a monk who wears a robe but is not affiliated to any Temple and the new law will give the Sanga Sabha the authority to disrobe a monk,? he said.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne warned that if action is not taken soon then there will be many people who will just wear a robe and claim to be a monk.
?When I make statements like this there are some monks who say politicians cannot remove the robe. Politicians or anyone else have no right to remove the robe. So I hope to bring laws where the chief prelates can do that,? he said.
There has been a lot of controversy about the actions of some monks in recent times especially after some of them had promoted ?hate speeches? targeting minority communities. (Colombo Gazette)
