The army says more troops have been pulled out from parts of Jaffna and transferred to the Palaly Cantonment.
Army spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said that a decision was taken to move troops from 13 small military camps located in the Walikamam sector in Jaffna District to the Palaly Cantonment.
He said that this will further reduce the presence of troops in that area.
He also said that the present locations, for which the army paid rent, will be handed over to the original owners.
“This is yet another step in the ongoing process of relocating the military in the Jaffna peninsula and reducing the presence of troops,” he added.
Army Commander General Jagath Jayasuriya had in May said that the army will shift most of the camps in the Jaffna peninsula to Palaly.
He said that apart from three army camps which will remain owing to security reasons, the rest will be shifted to the Palaly army base. (Colombo Gazette)
