Woman arrested over extortion

A woman from Ja-ela was arrested at the Pettah bus stand today for assisting extortionists, the police media unit said.
The police said that the arrest was made based on information received by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).
Investigations revealed that she had assisted extortionists to transfer money to her bank account.
Most of the extortionists are inmates serving term in prison who telephone people and threaten them and demand money.
The people are told to transfer the money to the bank account maintained by the woman, the police media unit said.
The police have obtained receipts of the funds transferred to the woman’s bank account. Investigations are underway. (Colombo Gazette)
