Sri Lankan born Australian singer/songwriter Alston Koch has made history by becoming one of the very few musicians to successfully negotiate a “moving deal” to join world renowned Universal Music from and equally well known international brand, Sony Music.
Koch signed the deal with Phil Israel, Chairman of Sydney based label ctrl-alt records which operates through Universal Music.
With his album ‘DON’T FUNK WITH ME’ signed to Lifestyle/SONY last year and eventually celebrating a No 2 position in the Southern Hemisphere, Koch negotiated the huge deal with Phil Israel who has been watching his success very closely.
Officially anointed as ‘THE FUNK MASTER’ by the Australian Record Industry Association (A.R.I.A) and ‘The good news chart success story of 2012′ by the Australian media, Alston Koch made the switch to Universal, thus creating history not only as a Sri Lankan but as an international musician.
“An incredible singer songwriter and his last song ‘TREES OF BABYLON’ proves it and we are proud to have him here with us. He has written another hit which we will release this summer throughout the World including a few surprises we have discussed with Alston which we will be announcing very soon,” said a delighted Phil Israel.
Alston Koch says he is grateful to his fans for his success especially after his new albums sold out and his tracks topped the charts.
“I am grateful to the people and fans who bought my last album as I have only just heard that it came in at No # 24 in the Top 100 best selling albums up to the end of the financial year and ahead of so many better known artists placed behind me. But at the end of the day it is not how many TV appearances one makes these days but how many records you sell. The recording industry is a business no matter where you are, London, New York or Africa. You must treat it like a business. There was a time in the 70′s when I was on Channel 9′s BANDSTAND every Saturday including appearances with ABBA, AC/DC and THE BEE GEES to name a few but that did not sell any of my records,” he said.
Last year Alston Koch stormed into the Australian Music charts with his new album ‘Don’t Funk With Me’. He debuted the Australian Top 20 album charts at number 9 ahead of the popular band INXS and just below Keith Urban.
In the Aria Australian Top 50 album chart ‘Don’t Funk With Me’ came in at number 42 ahead of top music industry names like Neil Diamond and the Foo Fighters. (Colombo Gazette)
