The United National Party (UNP) today raised doubts on a free and fair election being held for the Northern Provincial Council.
UNP Member of the Western Provincial Council, Kithsiri Manchanayake, addressing the media today, said that the government does not seem keen to ensure a fair poll.
He said that at a time when the international community is monitoring Sri Lanka it is best to ensure the polls in the North are free and fair.
The UNP member said that the heavy army presence in the North will have a negative impact on the elections scheduled to be held in September.
He urged the government to ensure the polls are not rigged and is conducted peacefully. (Colombo Gazette)
