Ranil insists opposition active

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe insists the opposition is very much active and played a crucial role in attempting to defeat the impeachment motion brought by the government on former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.
Speaking at a forum organized by UNP MP Eran Wickremeratne today, Wickremesinghe however refused to respond to criticism that the opposition is weak.
The forum was organized to discuss the draft national constitution prepared by the UNP which was released recently.
However some invitees began to question the ability of Wickremesinghe to lead the opposition for which Wickremesinghe refused to respond saying it was not part of the topic on the agenda for the forum.
Wickremesinghe said his party is looking at having more discussions with others on the draft national constitution prepared by the UNP and will then take it to the next step.
He also said that the UNP is looking at working with other opposition political parties under a common agenda.
Wickremesinghe said there was a need for a new constitution and a political revolution in Sri Lanka.
“We need to decide on the nature of the political solution that will bring the people together,” he added.
He said the UNP will work with other opposition political parties to abolish the Executive Presidency and fully implement the 17th Amendment to the constitution. (Colombo Gazette)
