President Mahinda Rajapaksa says the elections to the Northern Provincial Council is being held as the government feels the time is right and not owing to any outside pressure.
Speaking in Kandy, the President said that as part of the democratic process in the country various elections are being held.
He said that as part of that process the government is making arrangements to hold provincial council elections.
The President said that the government is doing all it can to mend the broken hearts of the people in the North.
He said that the government takes pride in the fact that it has been able to rebuild the war battered areas within a short period of time.
However he noted that some Sri Lankans living overseas are speaking against the country.
He said that there is no room for the country to be divided and the public must think broadly instead of politically on National issues. (Colombo Gazette)
