Karaoke championships – Season one kicks off

Sri Lanka is filled with talented singers and songwriters but a very few make it big. Unearthing that talent is not easy but Anil Balasuriya and Channel Media Studios have decided to do just that.
The preliminary rounds of ‘Karaoke championships’ season one is now in full swing with girls and boys, men and women of all ages trying out to be the champion of champions.
“When I kicked of channel media studios a year ago the idea was to promote the local music industry in every way that we could. A reality show of this nature was something that we had planned for a very long time. As it so happened we were fortunate to team up with the right corporates who shared our vision to make this a reality,” the Managing Director of Channel Media Anil Balasuriya said.
He said that the idea of the competition is to give the contestants as much exposure as possible with the preliminary rounds taking place in front of a live audience.
The preliminary rounds will be aired on Fridays on ART TV at 9pm with re-runs on Sunday at 6pm and Tuesday at 11am while The Sunday Leader will keep readers updated on the proceedings as well.
So why another reality show? Why not says Anil. He says there can never be too many competitions of this nature.Karaoke-logo1
“It gives the chance for talent to be identified and that is always a good thing so the more there are the better of the industry is. There is so much talent in Sri Lanka, so much so that there isn’t enough space on this page to go into it in detail but hopefully the karaoke championships will be a platform for these artists showcase this talent and take a step further to make their dreams a realty by doing what they know they were born to do,” he added.
He says 20 contestants will be selected from the audition process and these 20 will battle it out for nine weeks until there are just two left standing to battle it out at the finals.
The Battle rounds will take place at The Floor By O, The Voice, Qbarr and at The Manchester and the voting at the battle rounds will be done by both judges and the crowd in attendance on the night.
Stepahnie Siriwardene, Azi Sherrif and Anil are the main judges while guest judges will include Umaria, Sohan Weerasinghe, Randhir and Kushal Abeywickrama.
The Winner will receive a prize to the value of half a million Rupees while their own single will be produced and released to the market with an accompanying music video.
Channel Media Studios will also sign them on to its own record label and manage their career.
