Nominations date announced

Nominations for the elections to the Northern, Central and North Western (Wayamba) Provincial councils will be accepted between July 25 and August 1, the Department of Elections said.
The date for the elections to the three provinces will be subsequently announced, sources at the Department said.
Meanwhile the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) had a discussion with the Elections Commissioner last evening.
The discussions focused on preparations for the elections in the three provinces.
Elections for the three provinces are expected to take place in September.
The Northern Provincial Council was established by a proclamation by the President last week while the other two provinces were dissolved and elections announced. (Colombo Gazette)

Popular maths teacher further remanded over assault

A popular mathematics teacher has been further over an incident where a van driver was assaulted. Dinesh Nuwan Amaratunga who was arrested and remanded together with seven others until today, has been ordered to be further remanded till 5th August. The suspects had been arrested over the assault on a van driver in Kalagedihena. CID Director goes to Police to complain against lawyer

The Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Shani Abeysekera, has lodged a complaint with the Police saying a lawyer had made threats against him. In his complaint, Abeysekera said that the President of the Lawyers? Collective, Attorney at Law Manoj Gamage had made threats against him at a media conference. Just last week Abeysekera had appeared before the Parliament Select Committee on the Easter Sunday attacks to make a statement after he was summoned before the Committee.
