Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya had discussions today with a few political parties including the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) regarding the upcoming elections in the North.
TNA Parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran said that the talks focused among other issues on the displaced voters.
He said that the Elections Commissioner is expected to call for nominations for the elections on July 11 and then announce the date for the polls.
“The nominations may be called around the third week or fourth week of this month. During the latter part of September the elections will be held. The exact date will be announced most probably on the 11th,” he said.
The TNA MP said that there are some 7000 people registered as displaced voters and of that there are issues concerning 2000 of them.
He said that another meeting has been scheduled with the Elections Commissioner for next Friday to further discuss the issues. (Colombo Gazette)
