President Mahinda Rajapaksa has declared elections for the Northern Provincial Council elections.
The President, in making the proclamation, informed the Elections Commissioner to make the arrangements for the elections.
The proclamation also forms the Northern Prvincial Council which has not been in place as a result of the war.
The elections commissioner will now declare the date for the Northern polls.
Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya had said last month that elections for the Northern Provincial Elections can take place only after September 14.
Deshapriya said that there were reports the elections may take place on September 7 or September 14.
However he said there is not enough time to prepare for the elections by then so the next possible dates will be September 21 or the 28th.(Colombo Gazette)
