Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) parliamentarian and Government Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka says Tamils in Sri Lanka have no security concerns in order for police powers to be given to the provinces.
The Minister said that of the Sri Lankan Tamil population some 60 percent of them are staying in the south.
“The Tamils living in Wellawatte or Colombo will not get security by giving police powers to the North. They are living among the Sinhalese. So the Tamils have themselves proven there is no security concern for them,” he said.
Ranawaka says police powers should be removed from the constitution and he urged the opposition to support moves to achieve that goal.
He accused the UNP of being the main reason the provincial council system was implemented and he said the UNP now has an opportunity to correct a “historical mistake”. (Colombo Gazette)
