Bus operators threaten to strike

The Lanka Private Bus Owners Association (LPBOA) has warned that it will launch trade union action next week if the government fails to increase bus fares.
LPBO President Gemunu Wijeyratne said that private bus operators expect a response from the government to their demands during the course of this week.
“If there is no response then next week we will launch trade union action,”?Wijeyratne said.
He also accused the National Transport Commission of being corrupt and hopes to write to President Mahinda Rajapaksa over the issue. (Colombo Gazette)

Brothel raided in Wellawatte

A brothel was raided in Wellawatte last night and four people including the manager of the brothel were arrested. The police said that the brothel was operating as an ayurvedha spa along Havelock Road. During the raid the police arrested three women who were engaged in prostitution, the police media unit said today. The women are aged 33, 25 and 38. The four people are to be produced in court today. The Wellawatte police are conducting further investigations. (Colombo Gazette)

Three killed in Tangalle

Three people were killed following an accident in Tangalle this evening, the police media unit said. The police said that the accident took place when a CTB bus crashed into a three-wheeler along the Tangalle-Dikwella road. Among those killed was a 1 1/2 year old child, the police said. The police said that another three people have been injured and are receiving treatment in hospital. The driver of the bus has been arrested.
