Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya says elections for the Northern Provincial Elections can take place only after September 14 as nominations have not yet been called for.
Deshapriya said that there were reports the elections may take place on September 7 or September 14.
However he says there is not enough time to prepare for the elections by then so the next possible dates will be September 21 or the 28th.
“There are signs the Northern Provincial Council elections will take place in September as the Cabinet spokesman has also given an indication to that effect and it has also been mentioned in Parliament. I will decide the date of the elections once nominations are called for,” he said.
He however said that formally the Department of Elections has not yet been informed about the elections by the government. (Colombo Gazette)
