Shiral, Maithri to go to court

The UNP Provincial Council members who were expelled from the party are to file legal action against the UNP leadership.

The UNP had last week sacked several of its Provincial Council (PC) members, most of whom had openly campaigned against UNP leader Ranil
Wickremesinghe.

The UNP Working Committee had decided to remove outspoken UNP Provincial Council members Maithri Gunaratne and Shiral Lakthilake as well as at least 10 others on disciplinary grounds.

All the PC members were sacked over their alleged involvement with the attack on the UNP headquarters at Sirikotha in 2011. Lakthilake said that legal action will be filed against Wickremesinghe and UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake.

He also said that the UNP members removed from the party will contest future Provincial elections as an independent group and campaign against Wickremesinghe.

Lakthilake also said that 400 others in the party had been given warning letters by the party leadership and they too will join him and Maithri Gunaratne to contest the next Provincial election independently. He also said they had no intention so far to join another political party.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Democratic Party Deputy Leader Jayantha Ketagoda said that so far the UNP members expelled from the party have not approached his party to join them. He however said anyone accepting the policy of the Democratic Party can join the party.
