Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne today criticized the Department of Meteorology saying it had failed in its task to issue a weather warning last week.
He said that the advice issued by the department last Friday was for fishermen and the navy to be cautious when going out at sea and not to avoid going to sea.
The Minister also asked why the department did not alert radio stations of the weather threat instead of sending out a fax to the Fisheries Ministry.
“There is no importance to the fax the Department of Meteorology sent out on the 7th because it says to be cautious only. They also claim that it was sent to the media. If so how come it was not read on air by radio stations? Either it was not received by the media or the media did not air it. Simple as that,” the Minister said.
He also said that a new technology will be introduced to alert fishermen about extreme weather conditions 48 hours in advance.
The death toll from the storm rose to 54 today (Friday) with 6 people still missing. (Colombo Gazette)
