Police insist suspect had pneumonia

The police says a suspect who died after being arrested in the Galle area was not assaulted by the police but had died in hospital after falling sick.
A police statement said that the 28 year old man had been arrested last month with heroin in his possession in Habaraduwa.
Investigations had revealed that he was a heroin dealer and so he was further detained pending investigations.
Further investigations had revealed that the man, together with several other suspects, had robbed houses belonging to foreigners.
He was remanded till next Monday after being produced in court. However he feel ill and was taken to hospital where he died.
His family members and over 200 others protested along the Galle – Akuressa road against the police saying he died after being assaulted by the police.
The police said that the JMO had confirmed that the man died from?pneumonia. (Colombo Gazette)
