A demonstration was staged outside the Dematagoda police station this evening against the death of a suspect in police custody.
Relatives of the suspect demanded an explanation over his death after he was arrested last night for having drugs in his possession.
Police spokesman SP Budhika Siriwardena said that after the man was arrested in the Dematagoda area he had suffered from breathing problems while in custody.
The police admitted the man to hospital last night but he had died today, the police spokesman said.
The police spokesman said that an investigation was underway but denied foul play.
He said that the postmortem of the suspect who died while in police custody in Dematagoda found that he had died of a heart attack. (Colombo Gazette)
