Police say forced to use tear-gas

The police say they were forced to use tear-gas today to disperse students of the Sabaragamuwa University who had blocked the Colombo – Badulla road and had also injured 12 policemen.
Police headquarters said that some 1000 – 1500 students took part in the protest over several demands including against the suspension of 5 students from the University.
The police claimed that three ambulances including one which was transporting a child to hospital, were prevented to proceeding by the protesting students.
“When the police attempted to clear the road for the ambulances to proceed they were attacked using stones by the students,” the police said in a statement.
While 12 policemen including some senior officers were injured, 10 were admitted to hospital.
The police then used tear-gas to clear the road and also arrested 6 students for attacking the policemen.
The Balangoda police have launched an investigation. (Colombo Gazette)
