Southwest monsoon causing strong winds

The Department of Meteorology said that Southwestern monsoonal winds over the island will be strengthen at times today. It said that due to the convergence of South-westerly wind flow Showers or thundershowers will occur over Southern half of the country.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Uva provinces. Showers may extend to Puttalam, Kurunegala, Matale and Batticaloa districts too. Fairly heavy rain falls (about 100mm) are also likely at some places.

It also said that there will be showers or thundershowers at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Batticaloa via Hambantota. Showers can be expected at several places in other sea areas around the island too.

Winds will be Southwesterly direction and speed will be 20 – 40 km/hr. The speed may increase up to 50-60kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Jaffna and Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Jaffna and Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times.
