JHU submits bill to parliament

Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) MP the venerable Athureliya Ratana thero today submitted a private member?s bill in Parliament.
The bill is with regards to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, a JHU official said.
Earlier JHU member and Government minister Patali Champika Ranawaka had said that he will submit a private member?s motion in parliament seeking to abolish the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.
He note that in India if the provinces misuse their powers then the central government can take it over but in Sri Lanka the situation is different.
The Minister said that giving land and police powers to the provinces is dangerous and should not be allowed so he will put forward a bill in?Parliament?against it as a?private?member?s motion.
The government is to hold elections in the northern province in September and the Minister fears that if the TNA comes to power in the province then it will use the 13th Amendment to divide the country.?(Colombo Gazette)

Mohan, Anuradha assume duties

Ban to meet Petrie today on Lanka report

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will meet the head of the?Internal Review Panel on United Nations Action in Sri Lanka?Charles Petrie today, a UN spokesman said. UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said that he could not comment on the?BBC report citing the leaked report on Sri Lanka but the official report will be handed over to the UN Chief at today’s meeting. He also said that after the UN Secretary General reads the report it will be made public.
