Man dupes museum suspects

A man had duped three suspects who are in prison over the Colombo National museum theft and got Rs. 50,000 from a family member claiming he can secure their freedom.
The man had pretended to be an officer from the Attorney General’s department and had informed the suspects that in order for them to be set free they need to pay the Attorney General’s department and the police Criminal Investigations Department.
According to investigations the man had approached a son of one suspect in Orugodawatte and asked for Rs. 50,000 to secure the release of his father.
The son had made the payment but when his father was not freed he had asked the man what happened and the man had then said that another Rs. 80,000 would be required.
However following a police complaint being lodged the man was arrested by the CID and remanded after being produced before a Magistrate.
The CID is conducting further investigations. (Colombo Gazette)
