Men with poles were seen standing in Fort as the demonstration launched by the opposition drew close to the area this evening.
However the men dispersed and the protest against the government eventually ended peacefully.
The government and their supporters also staged a demonstration at Fort in support of President Mahinda Rajapaksa while the opposition began its protest walk from Borella.
Hundreds of people took part in both demonstrations resulting in a massive traffic congestion at Borella and Fort.
Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe addressed the gathering at Fort at the end of the protest against the government.
The opposition led protest was mainly against the increase in electricity tariffs. Several trade unions also took part in the protest. (Colombo Gazette)
