President Mahinda Rajapaksa has hailed the re-appointment of Najib Razak as the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Rajapaksa said the appointment of Razak as Prime Minister is a testament to the confidence of the people’s leadership and his ability to lead the country towards achieving more glorious progress.
Razak won elections held in Malaysia this week and was sworn in as Prime Minister after his re-election.
His office quoted President Rajapaksa as saying that Sri Lanka and Malaysia share a strong relationship based on mutual attraction and mutual respect continues to grow.
“I have full confidence that the friendly relations between our two countries will continue to be strengthened and cooperation in the new field can be expanded,” he said.
According to Malaysian media reports Najib’s Barisan Nasional won 133 seats in the 222-member parliament, well short of the two-thirds majority it lost in 2008.
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim People’s Alliance won 89 seats, up seven from the 2008 election but still well short of unseating one of the world’s longest-serving governments. (Colombo Gazette)
