Over 80,000 people have been affected so far as a result of the heavy rain over the past few days, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said today.
The DMC said that 7720 people have been displaced with the most number of people displaced in the Western Province.
It said that 89868 people from 20720 families have been affected by the rain, floods and strong winds around the country so far.
The Department of Meteorology said this afternoon that a low pressure area has formed to the East of Sri Lanka and is located about 800km to the East of Hambantota.
As a result it said the sea areas beyond 300km from Hambantota will experience strong winds, rough conditions and intermittent rain. The department urged fishing and naval community to refrain from maritime activities in these sea areas.
It also said that generally cloudy conditions will prevail over most parts of the island and showers or thundershowers will be fairly widespread over the island during the afternoon and night. Heavy falls are also likely at some places.
It also said that the general public is request to be vigilant about heavy rain, lightning activities and localized strong winds during thundershowers.
