Minister Wimal Weerawansa has voiced his strong opposition to holding northern provincial council elections in September.
Addressing the media today Weerawanse said that holding elections in the north will give the Tamil National Alliance an upper hand.
The Minister feels the TNA may win the election and then look at diving the country by demanding land and police powers to the province.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa had recently assured that provincial council elections will be held in the north in September.
Speaking at an event in Welioya, the President said that the people of the north had suffered immensely as a result of the 30 year war.
He said that those people will now have a chance to have provincial council elections and he hopes to have those elections in September. (Colombo Gazatte)
