Jayantha Dharmadasa has been elected as the new President of Sri Lanka Cricket, during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Cricket Board held at the BMICH today.
Dharmadasa was nominated last month as the next President of Sri Lanka Cricket by the Executive Committee of the Cricket board.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board said that the nomination was made as all three previous nominees were deemed ineligible.
Dharmadasa had given his consent to be the President in a letter to the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket.
The Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage had previously given his approval for Jayantha Dharmadasa to contest the post of President of Sri Lanka Cricket.
All three nominees for the post of President of Sri Lanka Cricket had earlier been rejected by the Sports Ministry.
The rejection was made based on the recommendations of a Sports Ministry Committee.
Accordingly former President Upali Dharmadasa, parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala and Sumith Perera have been unfit to contest for the post.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board elections were scheduled to be held on March 30 with former President Upali Dharmadasa, MP Thilanga Sumathipala and Sumith Perera filing nominations to contest.
However objections were filed against their nominations over allegations they did not qualify to contest. (Colombo Gazette)
