The police are investigating an incident where six children had been abandoned by their parents in Rakwana.
According to the police media unit, the children were produced before the Rakwana Magistrate yesterday to determine the next course of action.
The children were found abandoned in the Kehelwatta, Pothupitiya area in Rakwana.
Among them are 5 boys and a girl, all aged between 2 and 14 years, the police media unit said.
The Magistrate ordered that the children be admitted to a children’d home in Kahawatte.
The Rakwana police are conducting investigations.
Under local laws anyone found guilty of abandoning a child can face up to 20 years in jail.
Among the reasons behind mothers abandoning their babies is unwanted pregnancies and poverty, the police media unit said. (Colombo Gazette)
