BJP insists MR is no war criminal

The BJP on Monday said that it does not endorse the DMK’s demand that Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa should be declared a war criminal, the Indian Express reported.

“No, we do not share that perception,” said BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad. The party also refrained from categorically supporting Tamil parties’ demand that India should take a stringent stand against Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Commission meet.

“The BJP has always maintained that (Lankan) Tamils must be given safety and security, and their human rights must be protected,” said Prasad. “Human rights must be respected and victimisation must end,” he said to repeated queries about the BJP’s stand on the issue.

“The way senior ministers have rushed to Tamil Nadu… all this shows utter anarchy in the UPA. It appears that the countdown of this government has begun. The political credibility and viability of Congress is declining day by day and its allies appear to have realised it now,” said Prasad. “The elected government of Tamil Nadu must be and ought to have been consulted on this issue,” he added
