Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa says the LTTE overseas network has a significant influence over the electoral politics of many nations, particularly western countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States putting considerable pressure on Sri Lanka.
The Defence Ministry quoted him as saying that it is important to remember that although the LTTE was militarily defeated, its vast propaganda and support network remains intact and fully operational in a number of countries around the world.
“If Sri Lankans are not united at this point in time, and if we do not work together to build a shared future on the foundation of peace that has been achieved, we will not realize our potential as a nation,” he added.
He also said that despite the post war progress in Sri Lanka there are many in the country and outside who take no notice of the good things, but focus only on the negatives and quite often fabricate various bogus allegations against the Government and the country.
“”Sri Lankans who hadn’t set foot in the country for decades have come back to visit in large numbers; many are even choosing to settle down here. The Government has undertaken a comprehensive development drive to enable productivity and prosperity in all parts of the country”, he said. (Colombo Gazette)
