The police arrested eight asylum seekers who were preparing to travel to a foreign country by boat, the police media unit said.
According to the police the would-be asylum seekers were arrested on suspicion by the Puttalam police this morning.
Initial investigations revealed that the asylum seekers are residents of Vavuniya and Jaffna, the police media unit said.
The people who were arrested are to be produced in court today.
Last week the Matara police had arrested 28 people who were attempting to go to Australia by boat illegally to seek asylum.
A boat which had been prepared for the journey was also found near the Mirissa fisheries harbor.
The police also seized two vans used to transport the asylum seekers to the location where the boat was.
Investigations had revealed that the suspects were residents of Jaffna, Killinochchi and Vavuniya. (Colombo Gazette)
