A delegation of the Sri Lanka Muslim Council met the Mahanayakas of the Kandy Malwatta chapters this morning and discussed the issue arising from the issuing of the Halal certificate.
The delegation led by the President of the Muslim Council, N.M. Ameen, briefed the Mahanayakas on the concerns of the Muslim population as a result of the tensions that have arisen in the country following stiff opposition being raised on Halal certificates being issued by the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU).
The Muslim Council had said that Muslims in Sri Lanka wish to coexist with all other communities in the country.
The Mahanayakas have responded by saying that efforts should be taken to strengthen the ties between Buddhists and Muslims in the country.
Some Buddhist groups, including the Bodu Bala Sena and the JHU, have objected to the Halal certificate being issued by the ACJU in Sri Lanka. (Colombo Gazette)
