Cough syrups with Dextromethorphan suspended

The Health Ministry has suspended the sale and distribution of cough syrups with Dextromethorphan with immediate effect.

A statement by the Ministry of Health said that the decision was taken following an alert issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Dextromethorphan (DXM or DM) is an antitussive (cough suppressant) drug. It is one of the active ingredients in many over-the-counter cold and cough medicines, such as Mucinex DM, Robitussin, NyQuil, Dimetapp, Vicks, Coricidin, Delsym, TheraFlu, and others, including generic labels.

In Pakistan another five men who had ingested unknown quantities of Dextromethorphan cough syrup died on Saturday in Gujranwala, pushing the death toll up to 40.
