The Matara police have arrested 28 people who were attempting to go to Australia by boat illegally to seek asylum.
A police unit from Matara arrested the illegal asylum seekers in Weligama yesterday, the police media unit said today.
A boat which had been prepared for the journey was also found near the Mirissa fisheries harbor.
The police also seized two vans used to transport the asylum seekers to the location where the boat was.
Investigations had revealed that the suspects are residents of Jaffna, Killinochchi and Vavuniya.
Among those arrested are 22 men, four women and a two children. (Colombo Gazette)
