Mahela Jayawardene will miss the Test series against Bangladesh next month after suffering an injury during the premier league first-class match between SSC and NCC on Sunday in Colombo.
The 35-year-old former captain did not bat in SSC’s second innings as a result of his injury, which came about when he attempted to take a catch.
Jayawardene will undergo surgery today to mend the fracture in his middle finger on his left hand.
“His scan reports have already been dispatched to Australia for further investigations, but experts said yesterday that the forecast is gloomy for the veteran batsman to play [in] the Bangladesh series,” Sri Lanka’s Daily Mirror reported.
The selectors will pick Jayawardene’s replacement later today.
Jayawardene stepped down as skipper in all formats after Sri Lanka’s recent tour of Australia, and was replaced with Angelo Mathews as captain for Test and ODIs and Dinesh Chandimal in T20s.
The first Test against Bangladesh gets underway on March 8 in Galle. (Island cricket)
