The Australian government values its ties with Sri Lanka in combating human smuggling, the Australian High Commission in Colombo said.
The High Commission quoted Foreign Minister Bob Carr as saying Sri Lanka is an important regional partner for Australia.
“We value our ongoing cooperation with Sri Lanka to combat people smuggling in our region,” Senator Carr said.
Senator Carr said Australia has strong diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka and welcomed the Sri Lankan contribution to Australian national life.
“Sri Lanka has a rich cultural heritage and active community in Australia,” Senator Carr said.
“It is estimated 110,000 persons of Sri Lankan origin are living and working in Australia.”
Senator Carr visited Sri Lanka in December last year to deepen relations between the two countries.
“My discussions with President Rajapaksa and my Foreign Affairs counterpart, Prof. Peiris, were a highlight of my trip,” Senator Carr said.
“I am confident the excellent relations that exist between Australia and Sri Lanka will continue to flourish in the year ahead.” (Colombo Gazette)
