Cops warn of marriage fraudsters

The police today urged the public, especially women, to be mindful of ?marriage fraudsters.
A statement by the police media unit said that there have been reports of people promising to marry their lovers only to later go missing after obtaining money from the would be spouse.
The police said that in one such incident, a man was arrested last week by the Colombo fraud bureau after fleeing the country with over one million rupees he had obtained from a woman.
The suspect had?obtained?Rs. 1,845,000 from the woman in Nawala after promising to marry her.
However the man had then fled the country with the money but was arrested last week on arrival at the Bandaranayake International airport.
The suspect was produced in court and remanded till March. (Colombo Gazette)

A British man has been detained and tortured in Sri Lanka after travelling to the south Asian country to get married, his family and human rights lawyers have claimed, according to The Guardian newspaper.
