Over 5000 displaced in the east and central province

Over 5000 people have been displaced in the eastern and central provinces following heavy rain and floods.

The Disaster Management Center (DMC) said that almost 100,000 families in those areas had been affected by the bad weather.

The worst affected was the Batticaloa district where 4782 people have been displaced.

The DMC said that one person was also killed in the area after drowning in gushing flood waters.

According to the DMC 5197 people have been displaced in the two provinces over the past few day.

The DMC said that 355,102 people have been affected by the rain and flash floods in the eastern and central provinces.
