A prisoner on death row at the Welikada prison has threatened two people and demanded money, the police media unit said today.
The police said that a man in Matara and a woman in Galle had been threatened over the phone.
Following a complaint lodged to the police an investigation had been launched to trace the calls.
The police said that the telephone calls had been traced to the Welikada prison.
Investigations had later revealed that an inmate on death row had made the calls using a mobile telephone smuggled into the prison premises.
The police had recovered the mobile phone as well as two SIM cards. Further investigations are underway. (Colombo Gazette)
