Anglican Bishop says rule of law has completely collapsed

The Anglican Bishop of Colombo, the Rt. Revd. Dhiloraj R. Canagasabey, in a strongly worded  letter to his diocese, has said that over the past few days there has been a complete collapse of democracy in Sri Lanka.

In his letter the Bishop says Sri Lanka no longer appears to be a constitutional democracy after the Executive and Legislator disregarded the Constitution despite repeated warnings by the Church and other religious organisations as well as civil society.

“We as a Christian Church cannot remain silent in this situation. Such silence will be dishonoring to our Lord and a betrayal of our identify as His people. I wish to remind you that right from the day of Pentecost, the Church has learnt to say that ‘Jesus is Lord and not Caesar’ . Often this has led to suffering and persecution. The Church must always be prepared for this eventuality,” he said.

The Bishop also urged the Anglican Colombo diocese to wear white for mass on February 4, which also happens to be Sri Lanka’s Independence day anniversary. (Colombo Gazette)
