At least 44 Tamils arrested in Jaffna and Killinochchi have been detained in Boosa, the human rights commission in Jaffna said.
The 44 suspects were among 47 people arrested in the north following a tense situation which developed at the Jaffna University last November.
The Terrorist Investigations Division (TID) had arrested 46 people in December alone and complaints had been lodged with the human rights commission in Jaffna.
The names and other details of those arrested and detained have been recorded by the human rights commission.
Following the unrest at the Jaffna university in November, the police had arrested 4 students on the suspicion of having links with the LTTE.
Subsequently the police carried out raids in Jaffna and Killinochchi and arrested more people over claims that also had links with the LTTE. (Colombo Gazette)
