President Mahinda Rajapaksa has removed Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake by signing the relevant papers this morning.
Presidential spokesman Mohan Samaranayake said that the documents signed by the President were sent to her official residence this morning.
He said that the Chief Justice was removed in accordance with the impeachment vote taken by Parliament.
Parliament on Friday voted by a majority to impeach Bandaranayake, with 155 in favour and 49 against it.
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), which convened yesterday, had decided to seek a meeting with President Rajapaksa to discuss the situation following the impeachment of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.
Outgoing President of the BASL Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said that they want to discuss the future of the judiciary with the President.
