The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), which convened today, has decided to seek a meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa to discuss the situation following the impeachment of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.
Outgoing President of the BASL Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said that they want to discuss the future of the judiciary with the President.
He said that the President will need to decide if he is going to remove the incumbent Chief Justice or not following the impeachment vote in parliament yesterday.
BASL members, speaking after the meeting today, told reporters that they had decided to seek a compromise with the President on the Chief Justice issue.
However Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said a decision taken last month not to formally welcome a new Chief Justice if Bandaranayake is removed and replaced by the President, still stands.
