Minister Mervyn Silva has tendered his resignation from the Kelaniya SLFP electoral organizers post, the Presidential media unit said this evening.
The Presidential media unit said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had also accepted the resignation letter from the Minister.
Silva’s resignation comes following the assassination of Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha member Hasitha Madawala.
The police had this week arrested five people in connection with Madawala’s assassination.
According to the police media unit, the arrest was made following investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigations Division (CID).
Police spokesman SSP Priyashantha Jayakody had said that the police had also recovered a pistol, bullets, a motorbike and face masks believed to have been used for the crime.
Madawala was assassinated last Saturday night outside his house by unidentified gunmen who were on a motorbike.
The police also said that they had recovered a T81 weapon and bullets following arrest of the suspects. The suspects are residents of Kelaniya and Kiribathgoda.
