The police are investigating the rape and murder of a 4 year old child in Mandaithivu, Jaffna.
According to the Jaffna police, one man arrested over the incident on suspicion but was later released after it was found that he was not involved in the murder.
The victim, Chudarini Gunasegaram, was reported missing from her house on 27 December and was found dead the next day in an abandoned well.
A protest was held in Mandaithivu last week against the rape and murder of the child and a petition was also handed over to the police.
The Jaffna police say they had received at least six complaints of child abuse over the past several days.
The rape and murder of the child in Jaffna comes even as mass protests were staged in India against the rape and murder of a young girl.
