The police have arrested 12 suspects including three children for deceiving devotees and obtaining money during a Buddhist Temple pageant in Yatiyanthota, the police media unit said today.
According to the police, the suspects had gone ahead of the Temple pageant (Perahera) and obtained money from devotees who had lined up the streets to witness the event last night.
On information provided to the police the suspects were arrested and produced in court today. Among those arrested were three 12 year old children.
The police said that the suspects had obtained the money from the devotees by claiming it was for the Temple.
Following the arrest the police recovered just over Rs. 11, 000 in cash as well as five statues stolen from the Temple.
After being produced in court the three children were released on bail while the rest were remanded.
