Death toll reaches 36 and 7 still missing

The death toll from the bad weather experienced in the country since last week had reached 36 this afternoon with 7 still missing.

According to the Disaster Management Center (DMC) the death toll rose from 34 to 36 today with the recovery of the bodies of 2 people reported missing.

The DMC said that 17,912 people still remain in evacuation camps around the country.

Over 300,000 people had been affected by the heavy rain, landslides and strong winds since early last week.

The DMC said that over 4000 houses were fully damaged and around 10,272 houses partially damaged from the bad weather.

Several families in Mannar were also evacuated today owing to floods.
